Why KeySCAPE is the perfect tool for unlocking Terrain Modelling and all of its components

Key Systems Group is a major Autodesk Geo-spatial reseller. The company will be familiar to you if you are an Autodesk user, do a bit of ground modelling or landscaping, design roads, conduct land surveys and use Autodesk's mapping software. KeyTREE, a new feature for AutoCAD 2009, provides users with a tree survey - compliant with BS 5873:2005 Guide for Trees in Relation to Construction…that allows arboriculture consultants to manage tree survey data in AutoCAD drawings. It handles such things as the display of tree canopies based on and their orientation, root protection zones, Tree Preservation Orders, shadow assessments (for anywhere in the world) and tree schedules with customisable shapes, or for export to GIS software. Now that's detail for you. Apply the same philosophy to the rest of KeySCAPE, based on AutoCAD Map, and you will get a good idea of the scope of the software.

We use Keyscape mainly for planting plans and some paving details. Its big strengths are in specifying plant species and details, tagging and where it is worth its weight in gold is producing a totalled schedule.

As long as you have tagged every planting area and selected all the tags you get a very accurate account of your planting plan.

At times we have very complicated or very large planting schemes the largest being a 6Km long dual carriageway with very extensive planting. It would have been almost impossible for us to have accurately done this with out Keyscape.

Before we used a CAD based drawing system, on the large schemes it would have taken weeks to be certain of an accuracy of more that 90% now we are 99-100% within minutes of completing the tagging.

Neil Rogers, Senior Landscape Architect, The Landscape Practice Group, Birmingham City Council

"I have been using KeySCAPE in the preparation of landscaping layouts for just over a year now and am still fascinated by the software and what it can achieve. Prior to using it I was drawing my proposals using AutoCAD, but had to outline planting areas and plot trees using a series of symbols previously built up into a library. All of this information then had to be printed or copied and pasted onto the layout. When calculating plant quantities I had to manually measure the area and then transfer the information into Excel using a formula to calculate the actual numbers. If any subsequent amendments to the landscaping proposals were required I needed to re-draw, re-measure and re-calculate which took valuable time with the ever present risk of errors in manually working out the quantities.

With KeySCAPE it is so easy to outline an area to be planted, represent this by a symbol from their extensive library and at the click of a button the specification for that area is plotted and the details automatically added to the planting schedule on the layout. Similarly, trees can be added with a full specification and the complete schedule can be very easily transferred to Excel for pricing. All of the information is professionally presented on a layout in a fraction of the time it used to take.

However, the greatest benefit I have found is if amendments are necessary. By simply stretching the size and shape of a planting area, the plant numbers within the specification are automatically altered and at the same time the overall quantities in the planting schedule are adjusted. This saves so much time, means being able to ‘turn schemes around’ much more quickly and take on additional work.

The support staff at KeySCAPE are excellent and are very willing to help with any potential problems which means so much, especially for small businesses like mine. I would happily recommend KeySCAPE for anyone preparing landscaping layouts."
